On the day the naturalisation decision was announced, most Vietnamese fans were not discussing a 1m86 striker. They were discussing his name.

"Manh Duc" is the courtesy name of Cao Cao. Add teammate Khong Minh Gia Bao at Cong An TP.HCM, and social media had a ready-made joke: the V.League is completing its Three Kingdoms collection.

I read that news with two sheets of paper on my desk. One was a screenshot of a humorous post. The other was the career statistics of Michael Olaha in the V.League: two spells at Song Lam Nghe An, 53 goals in 191 matches. People say football is passion; I say passion also needs a balance sheet. In this file, the accounting section is longer than the joke.

A pipeline, not an event
